Jussie Smollett is an American singer, songwriter and actor who began his career as a child actor. Smollett rose to worldwide fame with his role as Jamal Lyon on the Fox drama series Empire.
Prior to his impressive performance on Empire, he has previously appeared in films such as The Mighty Ducks and Rob Reiner’s North. On February 20, 2019, he was charged with the crime for filing a false police report.

Jussie Smollett was born on June 21, 1982 in Santa Rosa, California to Joel Smollett and Janet Smollett (née Harris). Smollett received his education at Paramus Catholic High School in Paramus, New Jersey.
He debuted in 1987 as a child. His first film was A Little Piece of Heaven (1991) was an NBC TV movie. As a child, he also starred in The Mighty Ducks (1992) and North (1994). After a hiatus, Smollett returned to starring in Patric-Lan Polk’s LGBT-themed comedy The Skinny in 2012. That same year, he also appeared on The Mindy Project and released an extended game (EP) titled Poisoned Hearts Club.
In 2014, he took a major career leap when he appeared in the drama series Empire along with Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard. He portrayed the role of Jamal Lyon, a gay musician who seeks his father’s support and recognition. His role has been hailed as a work of excellence for its positive portrayal of a black gay man on television. He starred in the TV series Revenge the same year.
Smollett co-wrote You Are Beautiful and I Want to Love You These are songs on the Empire Album Season 1 Original Soundtrack, released in 2015. In the same year he confirmed to have signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. In 2018 he released his debut album titled Sum of My Music through Music of Sound which is his own music label.

Smollett claimed he received a letter on January 22, 2019, addressed to him at Chicago’s Cinespace Studios that contained both homophobic and racial threats and a white powder substance. On January 29, 2019, Smollett claimed he was attacked in the early hours outside his Chicago apartment building by two masked men who used homophobic and racial slurs at him and said, “This is MAGA country.”
He claimed his attackers beat and doused him with chemicals and tied his neck with a rope. Smollett said he was eventually able to overpower her. He was treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, there was no security video coverage of the incident, but cameras were able to cover two people near the site of the alleged attack.
On February 13, 2019, the Chicago Police Department picked up two brothers, Olabinjo Osundairo and Abimbola Osundairo, who were of interest to the case. The brothers were questioned but not charged with any crime and released on February 15, 2019. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the brothers’ release was due to new evidence from the interrogations.
On February 16, police sources said Chicago police found evidence that Jussie Smollett paid the brothers $3,500 to carry out the attack.
On February 20, 2019, Smollett was charged with the Class 4 felony for filing a false police report. Smollett is likely to face a maximum of 3 years in prison if found guilty.
On February 21, Smollett turned himself into the Cook County jail and got out the same day after paying $10,000, which is 10% of the $100,000 bond. He was asked to surrender his passport.
After his arrest, Smollett’s character was removed from the final two episodes of Empire’s fifth season.
